TEACHERS AND BROTHERS

David Goode had risen early, meaning before nine. As he waited for his espresso to run down into his cup, he peered through his picture windows at the beach scene far below. The marine layer hadn’t yet burned off, making for a crisp, quiet morning on the sand. Long rows of gray waves cruised into shore under an endless blanket of thick clouds.

He would have preferred to be sharing this peaceful view with his stunning new girlfriend, making two cups instead of one. He’d carry them out to the balcony, where they’d bask in the rhythmic sounds of the sea after making love all night. But now that he’d gotten to know his stunning new girlfriend better, he was beginning to suspect it would never happen.

Goode switched off the espresso machine with a discouraged flick of his finger. Lynn had never spent the whole night with him and he wasn’t sure she ever would. They hadn’t seen each other for weeks, not since the gunfight at the warehouse. He grabbed his coffee and headed for the balcony, telling himself she’d have more time for him after exams.

Despite the clear message that she needed to be left alone, he almost called her after breakfast. With the phone in his hand, he’d sat for thirty minutes debating whether or not to ask her out on a beach date. He’d pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and they’d sip white wine as they watched the sunset. According to his messaging app, however, three days had passed since he’d sent her a text, which she hadn’t viewed, and there’d been four since his last call, which she hadn’t answered. His thumb hovered over her name on the screen as passion waged war with reason. In the end, he quelled the impulse and settled into a lounge chair with a new thriller novel.

He read all morning, then stepped inside for a sandwich and a beer. After that it was back to the book. By five o’clock, having spent eight hours with printed-word action and adventure, he was lonely and much less interested in fiction. He wanted real action and adventure. Still hanging on for any sign of interest, he stuck it out for one more hour. But by six, as the sky grew dark along with his mood, he grabbed his keys and roared off in his street-legal race car.

The sun had set but the air was warm and sweet as Walker jogged to his first class with Master Chang. Finally cleared for any kind of physical activity, he could now resume his search for Trent Bolton. Regrettably, however, the Mexican authorities had not provided any significant assistance with regard to the Cartel del Norte. Probably because the crooks kept them on their payroll, Taylor had said. Worse yet, even if Taylor did manage to secure the cooperation and resources of the DEA, Walker, Park, and Goode wouldn’t be allowed to take part in the cross-border operation.

He slowed his pace as he came to the training facility.
